The CHS wrestling team started off their 2019-20 season with returning wrestlers Jaryn Hartranft, Austin Brett, Lavonte Bouie, Riley Reinhard and Adam Reinhart. They ended the 2018-19 season with an overall team record of 11-9 losses. The Roughs also made an appearance in the Colonial League tournament last year, losing in the first round.

Wrestling at the varsity level as a freshman, Gavin Fehr had to adapt to the new competition.

“I didn’t really know exactly what to expect in the beginning of the year,” said Fehr. “The jump from junior high to high school wrestling was a lot different than I thought it would be.”

Their season started off with a third-place finish in the annual Rough Rider Tournament. Fehr, Brett and Reinhart finished third, while Jacob Nye and Bouie placed second, and Hartranft successfully clinched first place in the tournament.

In the Colonial League, the team started off with a close 36-33 win over Southern Lehigh. They continued their streak in the league with wins over Salisbury and Palmerton, along with a non-division 36-34 win against Pen Argyl. CHS then defeated Palmerton at home with a score of 42-28.

The team went on to wrestle Palisades but suffered a 40-39 loss.

A win over the Northern Lehigh Bulldogs left the squad with an undefeated record of 4-0 in their division. Closing out the regular season, the Roughs faced defeat with a 45-31 loss against Northwestern Lehigh and ended with a 4-1 record in the Colonial League.

Junior Austin Brett still has high hopes for the team’s success.

“The team had a tough loss versus Northwestern which bumped us out of the league tournament, but I still see the team finishing strong,” said Brett.

The Rough Riders qualified for the PIAA District XI 2A tournament as the 10th seed and finished in fourth place overall.
